The service of Holy Communion and Anointing will take place as usual at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2.

A luncheon will be served but it will be at the slightly earlier than usual time of 11:45 a.m.

In Sunday's bulletin we said that in view of the funeral taking place at St. Mary's at 1 p.m. that day the decision as to whether to proceed with the regular first Wednesday of the month luncheon had not been made. It has now.

Bern Barrett

I have just been informed by the Diocese of Toronto that the Rev. Harry Bernard 'Bern' Barrett died suddenly today in Vancouver. Bern was the Incumbent Priest at St. Mary, Richmond Hill from 1972 to 1979.

The funeral will be held at St. Catherine's Anglican Church in North Vancouver on Sunday, October 30. The hour of the service remains to be set.

The parish family of St. Mary's send their condolences to Bern's family and friends.

Ecumenical Service in the Park

On Sunday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. we join with Richmond Hill United Church, Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church and St. Matthew’s United church for an Ecumenical Service in Amos Wright Park (behind the Heritage Center on Church St. just north of Center St.).

In the event of rain, the service will be held at Richmond Hill United Church. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Plan to come out and enjoy this spirit filled worship as together we celebrate the gift of creation and our shared faith.

Ecumenical Prayer Service

This Sunday, March 6 at 4:00 p.m., St. Mary’s will host an ecumenical service of prayer for the tragedies of our world caused by nature and war, with prayer, meditative reflections, silence, visual images, scripture readings, hymns, music. All are welcome. We are all affected in our global world. Let us pray for healing, comfort, peace, justice and reconciliation.

Shrovetide Brunch

Shrovetide* began as a 15th century celebration with ample food and drink and merriment before attending confession at the beginning of Lent. From this practice, Christians have incorporated Shrove Tuesday as a canonical event prior to Ash Wednesday. The day, reversible with “Pancake Tuesday”, gave Christians a “last chance” to gorge on rich foods containing eggs, milk, and sugar, before the liturgical 40-day fast of plainer, less-pleasurable foods. On Sunday, March 6 the youth of St. Mary’s Anglican Church will be hosting a Pancake Brunch to kick off your Shrovetide. The brunch will commence following the 10:30 a.m. service in Wrixon Hall. Tickets are $5.00 per person.

St. Mary, Richmond Hill will hold its annual Vestry Meeting as a continuation of our 10:30 a.m. service next Sunday, February 20. Here are some of the documents that were made available last Sunday: the Vestry Report which includes the Agenda (pages 4-14, omitted, are place holders for pastoral letters and minutes, some of which follow), Archbishop Colin Johnson's Pastoral Letter to Vestries, and the Minutes of the 2010 meeting. These are part of the hard copy version available at the church.

Chapel Restoration Project

The chapel restoration project started back in January 2005 when the ACW (Anglican Church Women of St. Mary’s) at their Annual General Meeting decided to form a committee to fund raise for the restoration of the chapel.

The chapel was built in 1872.

Diane Robertson headed the committee along with Flavia Redelmeier, Lorna Giles, Julie Hastie, Rhelda Stockall, Jack Walker and Chas. Mills.

This committee has generously devoted many hours of their time towards the daunting task of restoring this beautiful old chapel over the past five years.

Forward now to the summer of 2010 . . . 5 years later.

Most of the money has been raised.

Craig and Jared Wellington, Charlie Mills, Murray Baer and Jens of Keates Geislser –Organ Company from Guelph, Ontario, met for a lengthy discussion regarding the installation of the organ.

The contractors chosen, the work commenced on July 15 with the fanfare of police sirens at 5:00 a.m. because alarm system had not been changed to accommodate the contractors' early start.

The chapel was emptied of all the chairs, pews, pulpit and prayer stools. The brass plaques were removed from the walls and stored in the archives. The lights were taken down and sent to Luxfer Lighting Co. for cleaning, repair and rewiring. The fans were taken down and cleaned and stored in the archives.

Craig and Jared Wellington installed the scaffolding - high in the air so that they can reach the ceiling.

The first thing to be built was the platform over the entrance door for the organ pipes. Along with this the electrical cables to operate the organ pipes were run through conduit pipe under the floor from the Sanctuary to the Yonge Street entrance way and up the wall to the above mentioned platform.

A half wall has been built on the left hand side of the chapel (by the entrance to Yonge Street) to match the half wall on the right hand side. Wainscot has been installed on both these walls to match the rest of the wainscot around the walls of the chapel.

The Electrician whom we had hoped would do all the electrical work was unable to do so. Fortunately, Diane knew of a young electrician who came very well recommended and who was available in the evenings and on weekends. Craig and Jared very kindly then changed their work days to coincide with the Electricians’ hours.

A work crew made up of: Colin Webb, Lynne Webb, Diane Robertson and Chas. Mills began sanding the wainscot. A hot, dirty job! Sanding the wainscot by our own crew meant a considerable cost saving.

Colour chips were chosen (perhaps too hastily) by Chas. Mills and Diane Robertson after two very long meetings with the contractors. Craig and Jared painted small patches on the walls just to test their appropriateness. The colours, no doubt, will have to be re-considered as they are not quite what was expected.

There will be a viewing of the chapel by interested members of the parish on Sunday, August 15 after the 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. services. Members of the Restoration Committee will be on hand to discuss the restoration work.

Bishop Taylor Pryce RIP

Dear Friends,

It is with a sense of shock and great sadness that I email you the news that The Right Reverend J. Taylor Pryce, retired Area Bishop of York-Simcoe and Bishop Suffragan of Toronto, died on Sunday, August 1, after a brief illness. His body will lie in state at St. James’ Anglican Church, Orillia on Tuesday, August 3 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. where his wife Mari and family will receive visitors. The funeral liturgy will take place at St. James’ Cathedral, Toronto at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, with burial following at St. Paul’s, Columbus Cemetery, near Brooklin. A reception will be held at St. Thomas’ Brooklin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Bishop Pryce's obituary, as well as an opportunity to extend your condolences, may be found by linking to the Carson Funeral Home in Orillia.

He had a long and faithful ministry and his innovations as an area bishop have been a real and long-lasting gift to the church as we have moved more fully into a style of Episcopal ministry in this diocese that he helped to create.
